Happy Mother’s Day, 2019!

What is Mother’s Day? Well, Mother’s Day is a celebration meant to honor mothers and celebrate motherhood, maternal bonds and the influence of mothers in society. It is also one of those holidays that is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world. It complements Father’s Day, the celebration honoring fathers.

As a Romanian, I only recently found out that in most countries Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May. Most East European countries (including Romania) celebrate or used to celebrate Mother’s Day on March 8th. This date marked Mother’s Day as well as Women’s Day in Romania since the time of the communist period. The date was changed to the 5th of May this year.

However, in the USA, Canada, some European countries, Australia, New Zealand, India, China, Japan, the Philippines and South Africa, it is celebrated on the 12th of May. Notable exceptions to this rule are the UK and Ireland, which celebrate Mother’s Day on the fourth Sunday in Lent. Most Arab countries celebrate Mother’s Day on March 21st (vernal equinox). For a complete overview of the dates of Mother’s Day around the world see Mother’s Day on Wikipedia.

Therefore, Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers everywhere for all the days of the year! May you be blessed by God and cherished by your children!
